KARWAR: Will Belekeri port near Ankola, known for iron ore export, regain its lost glory? Local people have been urging the state government and the district administration to explore the possibilities of developing it into a major fisheries port.Belekeri port was always preferred over Karwar port for iron ore export. First, it was the Mines and Minerals Trade Corporation Limited (MMTCL), which initiated the export of iron and manganese ore from Belekeri in the 70’s. The export activity continued even in the 90’s.After MMTCL stopped its activities, the port was pushed into oblivion.Belekeri port began to flourish again when the state government allowed the export of iron ore from the port in 2004. It was a time when there was heavy demand for iron ore from Hospet-Bellary area in China. Many iron ore exporting companies were given permits to operate from Belekeri port.Though Belekeri is not a natural port and the ships have to anchor almost 8-10 km away from the port, the exporters preferred it due to various reasons. The port being nearer to Hospet-Bellary region than Karwar by almost 25 km is the main reason. Secondly, Belekeri port has greater space for stacking the ore.
