CHENNAI: The TN Dr Ambedkar Law University has been directed by the Madras High Court to consider the claim of a candidate, having 80 percent permanent physical impairment, for admission to the three-year BL degree course for 2011-12. Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar gave the direction while disposing of a writ petition from M Jayavelu, on July 11. Petitioner was 31 years old against the maximum age limit of 30 years.Petitioner contended that even though three per cent of the seats were reserved for disabled persons, which was a mandatory requirement under the Persons with Disabilities Act and the State had also ordered to grant upper age relaxation for admission to various courses by a GO dated Sept 3, 1993, his case was not considered by the varsity. Additional Government Pleader P Sanjai Gandhi and varsity counsel VMG Ramakannan stated that these GOs were still in force and, therefore, appropriate direction might be issued to the authorities.
