New Delhi: For residents of Sangam Vihar, Asia's largest illegal colony, the demand is of basic amenities like road, water and electricity. They say parties come, make promises of authorising the colony but no one does anything for them.
After having seen the working of both the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party, its residents are veering towards the Aam Aadmi Party, expecting the Arvind Kejriwal-led outfit to deliver. While BJP chief ministerial candidate and former IPS officer Kiran Bedi has several people rooting for her, the Congress has been pushed to a distant third in the area.
A close fight is expected between the AAP and BJP in the constituency. While AAP has fielded sitting MLA Dinesh Mohaniya, BJP has placed its bets on its former MLA SCL Gupta.
"When Arvind Kejriwal was the chief minister, he worked for the poor. Even Dinesh Mohaniya resolved our problems and met us. Narendra Modi kuch nai karega. Kiran Bedi toh char sau bisiya hai (Narendra Modi will not do anything and Kiran Bedi is a fraud)," says a voter Makhan Chand.
The fact that Kiran Bedi is a former Team Anna member and participated in Lokpal movement but is now with the BJP may backfire on her as she is being perceived as an opportunist.
"There is no Narendra Modi wave here. BJP's SCL Gupta did no work and returned Rs 28 crore," says the owner of a general store.
The Congress has changed its candidate in the constituency. In 2013 polls, the party had fielded Jag Pravesh but now former councilor Vishnu Swaroop Agarwal is contesting.
"As both SCL Gupta and VS Agarwal are from the same community, votes might get divided and AAP will reap benefit from it," says Kailash Agarwal, a businessman.
BJP has a strong vote bank in the area. Many people in Sangam Vihar are staunch followers of the BJP. "BJP will win from here. SCL Gupta has a clean image, even if he didn't do anything he returned the money," says Manmohan Singh.
In 2013, AAP's Dinesh Mohaniya won the election but is facing tough contest this time.
