The family members of Netra, a victim of honour killing, have allegedly confessed to the police that they were irked with Vithal Kuri, her husband, as he had bad-mouthed them.
The police said Netra and Kuri were smothered to death by her father Jyotyeppa Bagayi and brothers Vithal and Yamanappa on Monday. While Netra belonged to the Maratha community, Kuri hailed from the Kuruba community.
The police said that, though Netra’s family did not approve of the wedding, they remained silent. Netra’s family was upset and embarrassed after the couple eloped and married, the police said. However, after Netra delivered a baby girl, her family wished that the couple lead a happy life.
According to the police Bagayi had said that Kuri had mistaken his families silence and told the villagers that though Kuri had eloped with a girl belonging to a forward community and got married, her family did nothing for him.
‘Threat from Family’
During a Janata Darshan held last month, Netra had told SP Sandeep Patil that there was a threat to her and Kuri’s lives from her family. The police had then warned both the families not to disturb the couple. On Monday, however, the trio attacked the couple with an iron rod and smothered them to death, while they were asleep with their baby Vinanti.
Family Forced to Shift
Netra’s family members had locked Kuri’s house and forced his family to leave Lolasur village three months ago. The family, after a compromise with the village elders, had moved to Vaderahatti village. Scared to face Netra’s family, the couple had moved out of the village and returned after Netra gave birth to a girl.
