THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  The  Kerala University (KU) has asked principals of affiliated colleges to declare holidays, if necessary, to enable teachers to attend the valuation camps of the second semester degree examinations for eight days from Thursday to August 12. This is among the major measures being initiated by the University to overcome the reality of not getting enough teachers for the valuation camps. The meeting of the chairmen of the valuation camps will be held on Thursday and Friday before the camps commence. The actual camps will be held from August 8 to 12. The decision to take strong action against teachers who fail to attend the valuation camps was taken at a meeting of college principals held earlier.  Kerala University Vice-Chancellor A Jayakrishnan told City Express that the University had decided to go in for strict action against those teachers who purposefully stay away from valuation camps. The principals have been asked to ensure that all teachers attend the camps. A directive has been issued giving them powers to close down colleges to overcome the shortage of teachers to conduct regular classes. Strict disciplinary action will be initiated against violators. Pro Vice-Chancellor J Prabhash will be in charge of the camps, he said. As per the regulations of the choice-based credit and semester system, the results should have been published within 45 days of completing the examinations. The second semester examinations had ended on June 6. As per rules, the results had to be published on July 21. However, following the non-cooperation of teachers, the valuation camps would commence only on Thursday. The decision to initiate strict action against teachers was taken as the number of absentees at valuation camps was very high. This had been delaying the publishing of examination results even to the extent of sabotaging the objectives of the choice-based credit and semester system introduced in colleges under the Kerala University last year. During the valuation camps for first semester examinations, there was an absence of over 50 teachers at a single camp at Alappuzha. The absence of teachers had caused undue delay in the publication of the first semester results also. The first semester examinations had got over last December. The results of the BCom examinations were published three months behind schedule in May. The results of the BSc examinations were published only in June and BA results in July. As per an estimate, more than 30,000 papers will have to be evaluated for each semester. However, the university has only around 200 teachers for evaluation duty.
