Members of the Congress’s Chennai districts held a demonstration in support of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant on Thursday.
They played the electricity card, raising questions over whether the protestors did not want electricity for their homes. “The power situation in TN is already in a bad state. If we have to give up nuclear power, we will have to start a new search to find new sources of energy. Tamil Nadu will remain dark,” said Tiru-nelveli MP S S Ramasubbu. Senior Congress leader Kumari Anandan spoke of how a number of scientific advancements, which are now considered basic, met with opposition when they were introduced.
The CPM, meanwhile, called for an independent expert committee to look into the safety aspects of the plant. The party’s State unit suggested the plant be subjected to inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). State secretary G Ramakrishnan pointed out that the IAEA had inspected the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station at Rawatbhata, and suggested a similar exercise at KKNPP.
