KOCHI: A new ten-lakh sq ft terminal with the capacity to handle 4,000 passengers during peak hours is being planned at the Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL), Nedumbassery, Ports and Airports Minister K Babu told the Assembly on Wednesday. The new terminal, which is expected to cost Rs 300 crore, will have 15 aerobridges, he said in reply to a submission by Anvar Sadath MLA. “The new terminal is designed to cater to CIAL’s requirements for the next ten years,” Babu said.Several other facilities are also being planned at the airport to handle the future growth in passenger volumes and flights. The aircraft parking bay will be expanded to accommodate more aircraft. A `166-crore project is on the anvil to widen the Athani-Airport stretch of NH-47. The existing car park will be expanded at a cost of `16 crore.“The state government will take all efforts to improve the facilities at CIAL which handles the largest passenger volume in the state,” he said.Probe into postingsAn investigation has been launched into the appointments at CIAL on the instructions of the CIAL director board. Appropriate steps will be taken once the probe is completed, the minister said. Thirteen of the 16 managerial postings have been found to be irregular. The CIAL MD has been asked to take appropriate action in this regard, the minister said.
