Kerala: 14-Year-Old Who Tested Positive for Nipah Dies of Cardiac Arrest
Kerala Health Minister Veena George had on Saturday confirmed Nipah infection in the 14-year-old boy from Malappuram district

The 14-year-old boy in Kerala who had tested positive for Nipah infection died due to cardiac arrest, Health Minister Veena George said on Sunday. The boy from Pandikkad Malappuram district suffered a massive cardiac arrest at 10:50 am on Sunday and efforts to revive him failed.

After NIV-Pune on Saturday confirmed that the boy had the Nipah virus, he was moved to the Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode from a private hospital.

“He was on ventilator support. The urine output had reduced this morning. After a massive cardiac arrest, the revival efforts failed and he passed away at 11.30 am,” George was quoted by PTI as saying. The cremation will take place according to international protocol.

“Further matters on the funeral will be decided only after the district Collector holds a discussion with the boy’s parents and the family,” George added.

Currently, three people are in isolation at Kozhikode Medical College.

The Centre has advised immediate public health measures in order to contain the disease. A joint outbreak response Central team will be deployed to assist the State with case investigation, identification of epidemiological linkages, and technical support

Speaking on the matter, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan said, “Kerala, a few years back has seen this Nipah virus and Kerala took prompt action. So, I hope the government and the authorities, especially the medical people will bring the situation under control.”
