BANGALORE: Ulsoor lake, over the past six days, wore a busy look as water sports teams from all over the country descended upon the city to participate in the 22nd National Kayaking and Canoeing Championship.The lake is the home of the Madras Engineers Group (MEG) and Centre and they were one of the organisers of the championship along with the Karnataka Amateur and Water Sports Association (KAWA) and the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association (IKCA).The winning team was from Madhya Pradesh and the State was declared the overall winners in the men and women’s categories with 110 points.The team from the Services Sports Control Board was declared the Runners up with a total of 89 points.Twisha K from Karnataka was declared outstanding player in the women’s category. Kerala was the runner up in the senior women’s category and Madhya Pradesh again took first place.Anand Shanker, Secretary, KAWA, reiterated his association’s commitment to provide all required assistance to educational institutions looking to start water sport activities in their campuses. He also announced that Bangalore would go on to become an important southern centre for Canoeing in the near future.Around 900 participants took part in the event and over 28 teams were represented from India along with around 30 international paddlers. The prizes were given away by Governor Hans Raj Bhardwaj.Speaking on the occasion, he stressed the need to focus on water sports.
