Srinagar: The Kashmir police on Wednesday claimed to have busted a Hizbul Mujahideen module linked to Jehangir Saroori militant. Saroori has been active in Chenab valley for nearly three decades.
Police also arrested three militants, Riyaz Ahmad Wani, Ikhlaq Khanday and Towseef ul Nabi, all from Kishtwar, during a surprise checking at Bemina near Srinagar.
A naka team was deployed to nab them, police said.
Two pistols, 20 rounds and four grenades and wireless set were recovered from their possession.
Javeed Geelani, inspector general of police, told News 18 that the militants were carrying a consignment when apprehended.
Geelani did not give details about what the trio were planning to do or who handed them the arms and ammunition or where it was to be taken.
"We are investigating from where from they have got the consignment," he said.
The three accused were in touch with Saroori at one time or other and would act as his couriers, police sources said.
Saroori, who operates mostly from the jungles of Daccan, Marwah and the borderline of Anantnag and Kishtwar, has been active since the last 27 years. He has never been arrested and the last time his name cropped up was in 2009 when one of his close associate was arrested in Kishtwar.
''There is no fresh picture of Saroori available with police though many older ones are in police stations of the area,'' said a police officer.
The officer also said that Saroori has been active since last 27 years and is wanted for many subversive activities. "Even as we killed many of his associates, he remains a mystery," he added.
"Few years back there were reports that he had fallen ill and would give up militancy but we could not establish that. We have lost track of him because fresh batches of militants keep on coming from Pakistan," he said.
