Bangalore: The Karnataka Government is planning to ban all junk foods apart from carbonated beverages in academic institutions in the state.

Talking to CNN-IBN, Karnataka Health Minister R Ashok said the government is planning to put a blanket ban on all junk food as it is causing obesity among children. A law in this regard will be enacted soon.

"We are going to put a life-time ban on carbonated drinks and junk food in academic institutions as they have been causing obesity among children," the Health Minister said.

The announcement comes close on the heels of the Government's decision to re-enforce a ban on the sale and distribution of colas in educational institutions with immediate effect. Six days back, the Karnataka High Court had upheld the state government's August 14 ban on the sale of soft drinks in education institutions.

The move to ban colas began after Delhi-based NGO Centre for Science and Environment exposed that aerated drinks contained pesticides in quantities higher than the permissible limit.
