Karnataka govt shifts war memorial from park
Karnataka government bowed to pressure from the environmentalists and green brigade over the proposed memorial.

Bangalore: Karnataka government has decided to shift a memorial to the Bangladesh War heroes to an alternative site, bowing to pressure from the environmentalists and green brigade.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa said the proposed National War Memorial would be shifted from the Indira Gandhi Musical Fountain Park, which is in the heart of Bangalore.

Green activists had moved the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the construction of the war memorial.

The proposed National War Memorial had pitted the corporate world, green activists and politicians against one another.

Bangalore's Rajya Sabha MP and business tycoon Rajeev Chandrashekhar has been leading the pro-memorial campaign while Infosys Director TV Mohandas Pai is among those who feel that the war memorial would disturb the serenity of the park and its surroundings.

Krishna Apartment Owners Welfare Association had submitted to the Supreme Court that construction of the war memorial in the form of an auditorium over a six-acre land violated the Karnataka Government Parks (Preservation) Act, 1975, which prohibits any form of construction or change of land use in government parks.
