Thiruvananthapuram: Congress and BJP has called for a strike in Thiruvananthapuram following police action on the parents of Jishnu Pranoy, who had committed suicide in a private engineering college in Kerala.
Jishnu’s parents have been on a protest demanding justice since January 6, when he was found hanging in his hostel room.
Police sources told CNN-News18 a DGP level officer had asked for talks with the family to meet the protesters who were blocking the road when things went out of control, forcing the police to take action.
However, the family claims that it was the opposite, saying a delegation of 14 people went to meet the DGP.
As the situation went out of control, there was pushing and shoving following which the police removed them from the DGP’s office.
Jishnu’s mother was injured in the melee and admitted to hospital.
"First my brother was hit and dragged. I was holding his hands and walking they also hit me and I fell. It's been 90 days since my son's death but no one has been arrested so far. I will continue the protest," said Jihnu's mother.
Emotional scenes witnessed outside the state police headquarters as the police forcefully arrested and removed her along with other members of Jishnu’s family.
The mother was seen dragged by the police. She refused to move and was seen lying on the road.
The family was to start an indefinite hunger strike demanding arrest of the accused in the death of Jishnu. The family alleged that physical and mental harassment by the college authorities had led to the suicide and demanded their arrest, including Nehru College chairman Krishna Das.
The suicide had brought the condition of the plight of students in the self-financing colleges in the state and several protests erupted in several colleges across the state.
