CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday inaugurated through video-conferencing facility 8,251 houses constructed at a cost of Rs 303 crore under the Emergency Tsunami Reconstruction Project. Thanking the CM for inaugurating the new houses constructed for the tsunami-affected people, Jethruth from Pudukottai district, one of the affected persons, said her family was living in a hutment and was facing hardships during rainy season. Now that the government has given them a concrete house, they would be able to live comfortably.Each house is constructed at a cost of Rs 3.75 lakh in a space of 325 sq.ft and has a hall, bedroom, kitchen, toilet and staircase and designed to withstand the impact of earthquake, cyclone and tsunami and other natural calamities. All these houses have been insured for 10 years. Those who live along the coastal areas can hereafter shed their worries about the safety of their house and engage themselves in their work.When tsunami struck the 11 coastal districts on December 26, 2004, the then government headed by J Jayalalithaa evolved the Emergency Tsunami Reconstruction Project and decided to re-construct 14,364 houses in 444 coastal villages. For this purpose, houses located in high tide area near the sea have been identified.The number of houses constructed in each of the tsunami-affected district are: Tiruvallur (86), Kanchipuram (638), Villupuram (1,377), Cuddalore (296), Nagapattinam (801), Thanjavur (487), Pudukottai (615), Ramanathapuram (1,758), Tuticorin (408), Tirunelveli (228), Kanyakumari (945) and Pudukottai (612).
