KOCHI: The Justice Krishna Iyer Commission report on population control in the state has opened a Pandora’s Box with the leaders from a cross section of society strongly opposing the suggestions. “What makes Kerala different from other states is our talented human resource which we export. Even the state’s economy depends on this human resource to a large extent. When these types of committees make suggestions, the members who finalise the draft should be aware of their social impacts too,’’ Arif Ali, Kerala Ameer of the Jamaat-e-Islami, said. The commission headed by Justice V R Krishna Iyer made its controversial suggestions at a time when the Catholic Church is taking steps to promote the concept of large families by announcing incentives and benefits for those who have more children. The Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council(KCBC) said that it was the right of the parents to decide how many children they need.“Neither the state nor the administrators have the right to interfere in this right. The provisions of fine and imprisonment for those who go for a third child are violations of human rights,’’ said KCBC president Archbishop Andrews Thazhath.The Catholic organisation also opposed suggestions for an office outside of courts to settle divorce cases.“The suggestions for an out-of-the-court office to facilitate divorce also cannot be accepted. This suggestion is absolutely against the Indian tradition which values family relations,’’ said KCBC secretary Archbishop Francis Kallarackal.The KCBC Family Commission came up with a demand that the commission on Welfare of Women and Children should be dissolved. It has been revealed that the commission took its decision ignoring the dissent within the members, said Fr Jose Kottayil secretary of the Family Commission.
