On the day of Onam, we will not hold any competition as all the inmates will be busy preparing Onasadya. We are also planning a grand Onasadya with about 15 to 20 dishes this time. Later, the inmates will be given anopportunity to meet their relatives here. Usually many of them turn emotional while missing the Onasadya withtheir family,” Sunil Kumar, Jail Superintendent, said. Interestingly, some people who were arrested for grave crimes like murders and terror- related cases are actively participating in the event. “Though these people have beeninvolved with several criminal activities, here they are the ones who are actively participating in the programmes. In the Jail, Onam is celebrated without any caste or religious denominations. Also, most of the prize winners are from other states,” Sunil Kumar said. On September 1, the last day of Onam celebration, the jail authorities will organise a musical concert, including singers staying in the jail. The prizes for the competitions held in the last 15 days will be distributed on the same day followed by a grand sadya sponsored by Benny Behnan. first published:August 29, 2012, 11:10 ISTlast updated:August 29, 2012, 11:10 IST
