HYDERABAD: The Gujarat High Court on Friday relieved Satyapal Singh as chief of the Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the Ishrat Jahan encounter case, and appointed senior IPS officer from Andhra Pradesh JV Ramudu in his place. However, Ramudu himself is not keen on it. “I have not given my consent so far and I do not intend to,” Ramudu told Express. The 1981 batch IPS officer has undergone a major surgery recently and is still recuperating. Ramudu is likely to write a letter to the court expressing his inability to take up the job. Currently, he is the managing director of the AP Police Housing Corporation. During the last hearing, Satyapal Singh of the Maharashtra cadre had requested the court to relieve him of his duties and the court directed the Centre to give its opinion. The Centre on Friday told the court that Singh, named SIT head in May, may be relieved of his responsibilities. It also suggested the names of three IPS officers - Ramudu, Rajesh Ranjan of Bihar cadre and RC Arora of Madhya Pradesh cadre - and said one of them could be made the SIT chief. Assistant Solicitor General Pankaj Champanari further informed the court that the consent of Ramudu and the state, where he is serving was taken, and he is ready to take up the job. It appears that the State government had forwarded Ramudu’s name following a request from the Centre as a “routine” process. However, with Ramudu reluctant to head the SIT, the government can’t obviously force him to accept the job.
