JEYPORE: Thousands of quintals of paddy has been dumped in various mandis for the last one week following stalemate between the district administration and the farmers.According to reports, the district administration began paddy procurement on December 10 at Kaligam village and accordingly, 32 mandis were opened throughout Jeypore sub-division. However, during procurement at Kaligam there was a tussle over price fixation and fair average quality (FAQ) paddy between the millers and farmers. Following this, Collector S R Yadav suspended procurement at all mandis till Friday and directed farmers to take back their stock and come back with FAQ variety. Irked over the decision, the farmers of Jeypore, Borrigumma, Kundura, Kotpad and Boipariguda blocks alleged before the Collector that they had been taking FAQ variety paddy for procurement but millers are refusing to buy it on ‘irrational’ grounds. They further alleged that the millers want to delay the procurement process. With the administration yet to respond to the farmers’ pleas, they have resorted to dumping their stocks in the respective mandis. Farmers on Tuesday also blocked NH-26 near Jeypore for several hours, protesting the administration’s ‘apathetic attitude’ towards them.
