Tehran (Iran): Conflicting claims are emerging over who won Iran's presidential election. The votes are still being counted, but state media has declared Ahmadenijad the winner, while the reformist challenger - Mir Hossein Mousavi - says he has won the election.
However, Iran's Chief Election Commissioner, Kamran Daneshjoo, has confirmed that incumbent President Mahmud Ahmadinejad is leading with 69 per cent of vote share.
A BRIEF BACKGROUND
The man who's almost set to lead Iran again, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is the sixth President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He became the first non-cleric to be come the country's President when he took office in August 2005.
A religious hardliner, he is a critic of the US and favours strengthening Iran's relations with Russia, Syria and the Arab States.
Ahmadinajad is a driving force behind the country's nuclear programme, and has consistently maintained it is for peaceful purposes.
During his presidency Ahmadinejad is credited with launching a gas rationing plan to reduce the country's fuel consumption.
The son of a blacksmith, Ahmadinejad was born in October 1956, and has a PhD in engineering.
