Mumbai: Former Minister of State for External Affairs and Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday said that trade with Pakistan would help India create a strong constituency in the neighbouring country.
"Trade with Pakistan is going to be very good for us, because if we can give Pakistan capital and interest in selling their goods in India... it will become a peace constituency in Pakistan."
"So, through peace and progress, we can develop constituency for us in Pakistan," he added.
Tharoor was replying to a question by veteran actor Anupam Kher during the panel discussion after the launch of his book 'Pax Indica: India and the World of the 21st Century'.
"If you are looking for completely selfish, self-obsessed, completely narrowly-focused and un-distracted foreign policy, then it is China. Chinese have quite relentlessly pursued their national interest," Tharoor said.
Tharoor stressed that the purpose of the foreign policy must be to fulfill the purposes of domestic transformation of India.
"We must have a foreign policy that serves the need to protect our people and well-being and security of our people," he said.
Maharashtra Governor K Sankarnarayanan unveiled the book written by Tharoor.
Superstar Shah Rukh Khan, actor Rahul Bose, writer Chetan Bhagat were also present on the occasion.
