CHENNAI: With the 12th Five Year Plan envisaging a double digit growth, India needs close to 1,750 universities to provide trained manpower, said V Narayanasamy, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, speaking at the convocation of the SMOT School of Business. “We need foreign universities to establish facilities in India,but with certain restrictions to improve our quality and quantity of educational facilities,” he said.“I have noticed that India lacks in hardware technology. In the next five years, it will need hardware technology worth $90 billion, most of which will be sourced from other countries. ”Mannar Jawahar, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University, said India should accommodate people moving out of agriculture into manufacturing and services sectors while preventing them from migrating to cities. “By 2020, people from the agricultural sector will drop from 54 per cent to 44 per cent, while those employed in manufacturing will increase from 19 per cent to 21 per cent and those in services sector will increase from 27 per cent to 35 per cent,” he said.
