CHENNAI: As part of security measures ahead of the Independence Day, intensified surveillance by the Railway Protection Force led to the detection of a weapon in a passenger’s baggage at the Central railway station on Friday. Besides, 600 kg of PDS rice was also seized.An RPF officer told Express that a .32 calibre revolver was found in the luggage of Kundendu Pandey of Kanpur (36), when he arrived to board the Grand Trunk Express, set for departure at 7.15 pm. A former private security guard, he had come here on August 10 for an interview at Foods, Fats and Fertilizers Ltd, he said.  They found that he had applied for a licence before the Jammu additional district magistrate in 2005 and purchased it from the Small Arms Factory in Kanpur three years later. He had intimated the possession of the weapon with the Kanpur police. “We found his claims to be true and allowed him to board the train.”       The RPF carried out tasks such as manning exit, entry points and monitoring CCTVs. Searches also yielded 13 bags with 600 kg of PDS rice to be smuggled to Andhra.
