After CNN-IBN viewers' contributions, Ravi's treatment is going ahead and doctors say he is responding well.

New Delhi: The son of a daily wage labourer in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, Ravi had been run over by a truck and was admitted to the Manipal Hospital in Bangalore in a critical condition.

Doctors at Manipal had to amputate his left leg and Ravi's family needed Rs 2.5 to 3 lakh for his treatment and rehabilitation – a sum they simply couldn't afford.

But thanks to CNN-IBN viewers' contributions, Ravi's treatment is going ahead and doctors say he is responding well.

The hospital has so far received Rs 2,03,000 (Rs 2 lakh 3 thousand).

On December 27, while crossing the road at Chennakothapalli, Ravi was hit by a truck.

Severely injured, his parents rushed him to the government hospital in the district. But as Ravi's condition deteriorated, he had to be shifted to the Manipal Hospital in Bangalore.

Manipal Hospital Consultant Plastic Surgeon Dr Ashok B C said, “Thigh was completely crushed and he had lost a lot of skin from the umbilicus downwards till the knee.”

There was no other way out for Ravi. His left leg had to be amputated. The accident also took its toll on Ravi's father Obalesh. A daily wage labourer, Obalesh was forced to take a heavy loan from the village money lender to fund his son's treatment.

Obalesh said, “I have already paid Rs 43,000 and I can't afford to pay any more money.”

But there was more bad news in store for Ravi and his family.

Dr Ashok B C said, “The child also unfortunately has a cardiac disease called rheumatic heart disease making it much more risky taking the child for repeated surgeries. We are looking at a cost of about Rs 2.5 to 3 lakh, which includes his rehabilitation cost in the form of artificial limb.”

What's your reaction?
