Tampa Bay: The 15th edition of International Indian Film Academy Awards saw an interesting mix of winners this year.
Stealing the show this year was director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag', which won the award for the Best Picture.
The film, which was a slow starter at the box-office, gained momentum with the help of a positive word of mouth publicity. Mehra brought ace athlete Milkha Singh's life alive on the big screen. With dollops of patriotism thrown in, the film showcased the athlete's earlier life. The Farhan Akhtar starrer, which is a biopic on sportsman Milkha Singh, walked away with nine trophies at the IIFA Magic of the Movies and Technical Awards.
Milkha Singh was also in attendance at the IIFA ceremony. He got a standing ovation as the biopic on his life received the best picture honour.
Akhtar who also hosted the ceremony with Shahid Kapoor, bagged the best actor trophy for his powerful portrayal of Milka Singh in the sports drama. He was seen hugging the sportsman after performing on his hit songs such as 'Zinda' from 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag', 'Senorita' from 'Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara' and 'Dil Chahta Hai'.
Deepika Padukone nominated in the best performance in a leading role (female) category for three of her films -- 'Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela', 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' and 'Chennai Express' -- won the award for 'Chennai Express'.
"2013 was a lucky year for me and I think I have proved 13 is not an unlucky number. I thank my parents as they allowed me to pursue my dream. I left home with one suit case when I was 18-year-old. I think I have a long way to go but I do feel I am on the right path," Deepika said after receiving the award. Deepika was also honoured with the best entertainer of the year award.
The best supporting actor awards were bagged by Aditya Roy Kapur for 'Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani' and Divya Dutta for 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'. Known as one of the most versatile actresses, Dutta enthralled everyone with her stellar performance in 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'. The actress brought forth the care and affection as the elder sister of Farhan Akhtar (Milkha Singh) in the film.
Veteran actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha was given the Lifetime achievement award for his outstanding contribution to the Indian cinema, while Hollywood star John Travolta received the 'Most Popular All time International star in India' award.
Sinha, who is wildly popular for his power-packed performances and a unique dialogue delivery style, is known for his films such as, 'Asli Naqli', 'Khoon Bhari Maang' and 'Kranti', among many others.
While Arshad Warsi won the award for best performance in a comic role for 'Jolly LLB', veteran actor Rishi Kapoor won the award for best performance in a negative role for the film 'D-Day'.
