CHITRADURGA: The Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) team on Friday, strongly objected to illegal dumping of mining waste, resulting in serious environmental degradation at various mining spots in Bheemasamudra region of the district.Reliable sources told Express that, during the visit, the team discovered Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) giving importance only to extraction of ores that resulted in loss of valuable vegetation. The team also found out differences in maintaining safety zones in and around the mining areas.During the visit, director general of ICFRE Dr V K Bahuguna identified that grass should have grown properly over the dumps, which has not been possible.Apart from this, trees of other species should have been growing there, but mine owners have grown eucalyptus which has been banned by the environment ministry. The team comprising Dr V K Bahuguna, Ashim, Ruchi, Sudhir Kumar, Rama Rao, H B Vasista, Dharmendra Verma, S C Joshi and others were present in the team that visited SESA Goa, BBH Mines and Mineral Enterprises Limited and had conducted an extensive study.Deputy director of department of mines and geology M N Udaya Shankar, DFO Srinivasalu, IBM officials and other senior districtlevel officials were present with the team during the visit.Members in the team also hinted of revisiting the district again from October 13 to 15 for extensive environmental analysis.
