New Delhi: What makes a film popular with the viewers and critics alike? Besides a strong script, a good film shouldn't just be interesting, but also have endearing characters. And if the viewers manage to empathize and care about the difficulties the characters face all through their cinematic journey, the film earns extra points.

In its 100th year, Indian cinema has become more bold and doesn't shy away from breaking the norm. 2013 too saw formula films working at the Box Office and raking in the moolah but it also saw new age directors experimenting with 'hatke' stories which got accepted by masses as well as critics.

In response to the IBNLive poll that we conducted earlier this year, our readers adjudged 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag', which earned 40% votes, as the best film of the year 2013.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra brought ace athlete Milkha Singh's life on the big screen. With dollops of patriotism thrown in, the film showcased the athlete's earlier life. Farhan Akhtar proved his critics wrong by portraying a difficult role with panache. The biopic brought back memories of the by gone era.

Ritesh Batra's 'The Lunchbox' earned the second highest votes. The Lunchbox may not have had made to the Oscars, but Ritesh Batra's film struck a chord with almost everyone for its simplicity. Performance by its lead cast was like an icing on the cake, and that explains why it earned 30.8% votes.

'Madras Café', loosely based on former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, worked because of a tight script and a confident performance from actor-producer John Abraham. Director Shoojit Sircar's film had mostly unknown actors playing character roles in the film which worked in its favour as they looked convincing in their part. It received 15.71% votes.

'Shahid', based on slain lawyer and human rights activist Shahid Azmi's life, was a poignant tale of how society perceives people with a tainted past. The film's leading man, Rajkummar Rao was especially lauded for his powerful performance. It earned 8.42% votes.

'Ship of Theseus', experimental yet poignant in today's time, had three different stories that made you think of life and its true meaning and received 5.37% votes. ####
