Lucknow: Cornered in his party after having lost the election for its top post, Janata Dal (U) leader and NDA Convenor George Fernandes on Thursday said he will canvass for the Samajwadi Party in the forthcoming Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh.
"When the leaders of my party can join hands with a party, which talks of fielding mafia dons in Uttar Pradesh, I have been left with no option but to campaign in favour of Yadav,"
Fernandes told newsmen in Lucknow in an apparent reference to JD (U)'s alliance with Apna Dal.
Apna Dal had reportedly said recently there was nothing wrong in fielding mafia dons like Dawood Ibrahim and Abu Salem as they had not yet been proven guilty.
Asked whether he would be joining the SP, Fernandes said it was not necessary to join a party to campaigning in its favour in the polls.
Referring to the controversial Barak deal in which he had been named an accused, he said he was being implicated in the matter at the behest of Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
Fernandes was in Lucknow to take part in the socialist ideologue Ram Manohar Lohia's 38th death anniversary.
