Lucknow: Days after the violent Kasganj clashes that claimed one life, hundreds gathered at the Hazratganj crossing on Sunday to form a human chain and stand against ‘communal forces’ at play.
Organizers said it was a gesture to call for peace, unity and to stand against communal forces in the society. People from all walks of life, including senior citizens, journalists, writers, social workers gathered at the Hazratganj crossing on Sunday.
The event, organized by locals was devoid of any political stamp and was a protest against the recent Kasganj communal violence, which claimed the life of Chandan Gupta and registered loss to property.
The gathering also carried messages like “Unity in Diversity”, “Hum Sab Bhai Bhai” and “Hamare Liye Samvidhan Sarvopari Hai” on placards.
The group was later addressed by social activist and former Lucknow Univeristy Vice-Chancellor Roop Rekha Verma.
“I have never come across another time in which secularism, democracy and the Constitution were put in such danger,” said Verma.
Prof Ramesh Dixit said, “These are the times when the middle class needs to come out of their protected lives and become part of the movements that are fighting for democracy and protecting India's social fabric.”
One of the participants, Asif Khan added, “This human chain is not for any particular caste or religion, but its purpose is to fight injustice and it should not happen to people of any caste or religion. Hundreds of like-minded people have gathered to spread the message of peace and brotherhood.”
