CHENNAI: Even though Chennai has shown a minor dip in the number of suicide cases reported last year compared to the previous years, the latest figures compiled by the Tamil Nadu State Crime Records Bureau have revealed that the incidence of suicide cases in the city continued to be high compared to most other districts in the State with at least three persons killing themselves every day.According to the statistics for the year 2010 that are yet to be published on the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) website, Chennai city, with 1,325 suicide cases for the entire year, ranked just behind Kancheepuram with a suicide incidence of 1,347 during the same period. However, when combined with the data for the suburban areas, Chennai beats all other districts by a handsome margin. In all, Chennai and suburbs have seen 2,513 suicide cases in 2010.Keeping in line with the trend seen in the last five years, the number of suicide cases among men has continued to be higher than that among women with the ratio being 62:38. While the State has witnessed an increase in suicides, both by men and women, the figure among men was 17.89 per cent when compared to 9.77 per cent among women.While the bureau is yet to collate the age-wise and reason- wise data for suicides in the city, preliminary analysis had revealed that most of the victims were below the age of 40, the NCRB officials said. Prominent reasons for suicides among men included financial distress and substance abuse, whereas, emotional and personal issues ranked high among women. Popular methods employed to take one's own life included consumption of poison, hanging and self-immolation.
