CHENNAI: Transport Minister V Senthil Balaji on Monday told the Assembly that the High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) Plan will be implemented in the current year. Quoting a Central notification and the orders of the Supreme Court, the minister said the initiative would prevent stolen vehicles from being used for criminal activities by fixing bogus number plates. The HSRP will be fitted in new and old vehicles as well on the premises of RTOs and unit offices. New vehicles will be fitted with the HSRP at the time of registration.Stating that an inter-departmental team comprising officials from police, transport and highways departments had been constituted to analyse every case of fatal accident in the State, he said the team would visit the accident spots, study the reasons for the accident and would offer specific suggestions to prevent them in the future. Last year there were 65,873 accidents (64,996 in 2010) and 15,422 persons died (15,409 deaths in 2010) in the State.On monorail project, the Minister said the latest technology is safe. “No grid power is required for operation. It is environment-friendly and cost-effective. They have the advantage of branching and serving interior areas and are not confined to a specific corridor. The selection of a successful bidder to implement the monorail project under the DBFOT basis (Design, Build, Fund, Operate and Transfer) is in progress,” he said.
