THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A low pressure area formed by the weakened cyclone ‘Thane’ triggered the heavy rainfall in south Kerala on Saturday. The state is expected to get fairly widespread rainfall till Monday morning. After its devastating effects in Tamil Nadu on Friday, cyclone Thane weakened to a low pressure system and was positioned over north Kerala early on Saturday.This low pressure area triggered the flow of wind and moisture from Arabian Sea causing very heavy rainfall in south Kerala. Haripad (22 cm) registered the highest rainfall. Thiruvananthapuram city (18 cm), Nedumangad (16 cm), Kayamkulam (15 cm), and Tiruvalla (14 cm)recorded very heavy rainfall.Heavy rainfall was reported at Chenganoor (12 cm), Neyyatinkara (11), Kottayam (10), Alappuzha (9cm), Punalur (8cm) and Vellanad (7cm).Other 13 centres in south Kerala recorded rainfall between 1 to 6 cms.“The low pressure area is weakening and is moving westward towards Lakshadweep. Fairly widespread rainfall is expected for the next 48 hours,” MET Director K Santosh said.
