THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: K Meera, the Advocate Commission appointed by the High Court, carried out an inspection at the Vilappilsala waste treatment plant on Saturday. The Commission, along with Environmental Engineer from the Kerala State Pollution Control Board K R Santosh Kumar, spent more than five hours at the plant, going in detail through the operation of the plant, assessing the leachate treatment plant and other construction activities there and holding discussions with the Panchayat and Corporation officials, striking locals and the plant employees. The Commission will submit a report of its findings on Tuesday to the High Court. While Mayor and the Standing Committee Chairpersons of the City Corporation kept away from the Vilappilsala plant during the Commission’s visit, the latter was accompanied by Panchayat president of Vilappil and Janakeeya Samithi leaders during the inspection who briefed her on the issue. Additional secretary and health officer represented the Corporation and elaborated on the activities undertaken by the Corporation at the plant. K Meera said she was there to assess the three major points directed by the Court including the distance of the leachate plant from the nearby water source. Vilappil panchayat president Sobhana Kumari said she told the Commission the difficulties faced by the local people owing due to the working of the plant and hoped that the Commission would give a report favourable to the panchayat in the court. The members of the Janakeeya Samithi also said that the commission had listened to their woes with patience.
