KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Friday directed the police to provide adequate protection to the Vice-Chancellor (VC) and the registrar of Calicut University. The court also held that the ongoing agitations by the employees’ organisations should be held at least 200 metres away from the university building.“It is shocking that the VC and the registrar had to approach the High Court for police protection, the police should have granted it instead of forcing the VC to approach the High Court,” the court said. A Division Bench comprising Justice C N Ramachandran Nair and Justice Babu Mathew P Joseph passed the order while considering the VC’s plea for police protection. The petitioner approached the court as the agitation organised by various employees organisations on the university campus has turned violent.“We cannot understand how weapons are allowed to be carried by the staff inside the campus. If required, the police should search the staff and others entering the campus. Nobody should be allowed to carry sticks and other weapons,” the court observed. The petitioner alleged that the employees union members prevented him from attending an official function on February 4 and manhandled him. The court directed the police to deploy sufficient force for the protection of the campus and held that agitations should not be permitted in the administrative office and pareekshabhavan. The employees associations had started an agitation demanding promotion and declaration of probation in various cadres.
