BHUBANESWAR: Sixty State-level exhibitors in handicrafts and handloom sectors would showcase their products at the three-day International Handloom and Handicraft fair-2011 to be held in the city from October 20 to 22. Overseas buyers and exporters from countries like US, South Africa, Australia, Germany and Lebanon have confirmed their participation in the fair, informed an official at the preparatory meeting of the fair on Friday. The meeting was presided over by Arti Ahuja, the State Textiles and Handloom Secretary. The International Handicraft and Handloom Fair 2011 is being organised by the Department of Handicrafts and Department of Handloom and Textiles.Orissa is famous for its exquisite handloom and handicraft. The State has over 1.5 lakh artisans, engaged in palm leaf writing, patachitra, applique and metal work and about four lakh weavers producing a rich range of textiles. “The three-day event will not only help our artisans showcase their handicraft and handloom treasures, but also provide an ideal opportunity for the buyers for placing orders at very competitive prices,” she said. A buyer-seller meet will also be organised which will enable the overseas buyers to get a first hand feel of the products they want to source and they can directly source the products in the form in which they are displayed or with modification as per their requirement. The fair will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the Handicrafts Complex at State Institute for Development of Arts & Crafts (SIDAC), Gandamunda.The first International Handloom and Handicraft fair was organised in February last year that made an on-spot business of Rs. 75 lakh and follow-up business of Rs. 3 crore.
