New Delhi: The deputy mayor of the town of Nablus in the West Bank Mahdi al-Khamdali was abducted at gunpoint allegedly by the al-Aqsa martyrs brigades, a group linked to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement.

Security officials said that al-Khamdali, a senior Hamas official, was pulled out of his car and taken away in another car.

Although there was no immediate claim of responsibility, security officials said they believed the kidnappers were Fatah supporters.

Ruling Palestinian movement Hamas said it will double its armed force to 12,000 men, hours after President Abbas declared it illegal.

Abbas made the announcement two days after Hamas members force attacked the home of a senior security commander in Gaza. Abbas' office said the decision was made in light of continued security chaos and assassinations of a number of our fighters.
