KOCHI: Kerala State Literacy Mission founder-director Gopinath Panangad has said that some environmentalists are opposing schemes in the name of environmental protection without looking into the merits of the project.“This can be seen in the case of a number of projects in the state. Such threats are not very evident in other states,” he said after inaugurating a seminar on new trends in urban development organised by the Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR). CPPR Chairman D Dhanuraj said that Kochi had extended its capacity to the limit and the civic amenities had reached a breaking point. He noted that the city roads are flooded not only with vehicles from the metro but also from neighbouring districts that makes traveling difficult. Yasoram group chairman A R S Vadhyar said that flyovers were the only possible solution in a place like Kochi, where land was scarce and people were reluctant to relinquish it. Noting that the existing roads could not hold the traffic volume any more, he suggested that sky city flyover highways were the most practical alternatives. Yasoram group director Rohit Prabhu, while making an audiovisual presentation of the Skycity Project, explained that the structure which was built on pillars over an inland backwater segment was eco-friendly and the construction could be completed within three years. He also hoped that the project, which was now under the consideration of the government, would soon get official clearance.
