New Delhi: The Government is planning to import 25,000 to 50,000 metric tonnes of onion over the next 10 days to tide over the crisis arising out of rising prices.
National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED) has been asked to examine steps to to boost imports. The Centre is also in talks with the railways to double the number of trains to make onion available at places where it is required.
The Agriculture and Consumers Affairs ministries are also taking measures to check rising prices. The Government has already banned exports and abolished import duty on onions.
Cabinet Secretary KM KM Chandrasekhar will review the situation on onion on Thursday with the secretaries of the Agriculture and Consumers Affairs ministries.
The Centre on Wednesday asked states to take stringent action against hoarders and directed the Commerce Ministry to speed up onion imports as part of measures to ease the crisis over spiralling onion prices.
Due to the measures taken by the government, wholesale prices of onions have been declining since Tuesday, though the impact is yet to be seen in retail markets.
