CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed the State government to consider and pass orders in accordnce with law, on a representation from advocate K Rajendran to carve out Mayiladuthurai from Nagapattinam and declare it as a separate district with Mayiladuthurai as its headquarters.The first bench comprising Chief Justice MY Eqbal and Justice TS Sivagnanam gave the direction, while disposing of a public interest writ petition from Rajendran, who is also the president of Social Action Team in Mayiladuthurai, on Monday. According to petitioner, the government, with a view to providing proximate and better public participation, welfare and administration, had bifurcated many large districts and created new oness in the past. Mayiladuthurai, having a population of about nine lakh with historical and religious backgrounds, deserved to be carved out from Nagai district.
