CHENNAI: As many as 142 newly recruited constables of the Goa Police Department, on Monday, successfully passed out from the CRPF’s Regional Training Centre (RTC) in Avadi after the completion of a 44-week training module.Dressed in CRPF khaki attire, the young police officers, who were in the age group of 18 to 23 years, participated in the traditional parade and took a pledge to serve the country with commitment, signifying their successful completion of the rigorous training, which equipped them with both combat and survival skills.DIG of the centre at Avadi, P Nagarajan, said that after issues such as naxal threats had cropped up in the country, changes were made to the training module adopted by the force to equip such police officers with necessary ‘know-hows’ to combat terrorism and insurgency. The 44-week basic training course included those on rigorous fitness, handling weapons, counter insurgency operations, field craft and tactics and classes on militant and insurgent groups. Human rights issues were also taught as part of the programme. The recruits also went through four weeks of jungle training during the module to understand the operations the CRPF was carrying out in naxal-infested states in North India.Though, the officers are usually put through another four weeks of “jungle survival” training in Chengalpet, where simulations of IED explosions and terrorist ambushes are done, the current batch of constables did not go through such an exercise as Goa had very little forest cover and as such, the need for such a training was not felt.Among the trainees were three graduates, 90 who had completed Class 12, and 49 who had joined the force with a Class 10 qualification.
