CHENNAI: The speedy manner in which pre-cast drainage blocks are being installed to create a new link channel, that will connect the drain system from the Ganeshapuram Subway, near the Vyasarpadi Jeeva Railway Station, with Otteri Nullah, has brought cheer to motorists and regular users of the subway.Once the installation is over, the new channel will be used to drain out stagnant rainwater from the Ganeshapuram Subway. This will ensure smooth vehicular flow in the region, even during the rainy season, a senior Chennai Corporation official told the City Express.  Earlier, vehicular traffic used to get suspended for long durations after a heavy downpour during the monsoons. On normal days, motorists coming from different parts of North Chennai like Vyasarpadi, Kodungaiyur, Erukanchery, Manali, Madhavaram, Redhills and MKB Nagar use the Ganesapuram subway to reach other parts of the city.  Besides, MTC buses also use the subway to reach MKB Nagar, Kodungaiyur and parts of Madhavaram. On days when water-logging occurs, traffic movement, right from the Ambedkar College Road, Pulianthope, gets hit badly. All vehicles, including MTC buses, are forced to use alternate routes via Vyasarpadi and Aynavaram.Motorists received a much-needed reprieve after the Perambur Flyover was inaugurated in 2009. Since then, MTC buses as well as other vehicles have been using the Perambur flyover on days when waterlogging occurs. As traffic can’t be blocked for carrying out the installation work, owing to the heavy usage of the particular stretch, the Corporation is carrying out the installation work in the night.According to officials, the channel work will be completed in another week, well before the onset of the monsoons.
