New Delhi: Ganesh or Ganapati is also known as the remover of all obstacles in life. Like neighbouring Maharashtra, the Ganesh Chaturthi is one of most widely celebrated festivals in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. These two states together have more than 50,000 big and small Ganesh temples.
More than 5 lakh Ganesh idols have already been sold in Bangalore and Hyderabad. The same number of idols has also been installed by the people in rest of the states.
Most of the Sarvajanik Ganesh Pandals (Public Pandals) immerse the idol after 3 days. Some do it after a week or nine days. In some rare cases immersion takes place after a month or two.
Bangalore
In India's third largest city, Bangalore, the administration has requested the devotees not to immerse Ganesh idols in all public tanks and lakes. The City Corporation has allowed the people to immersion of idols at 22 public lakes in different parts of the city.
According to civic department sources, over one lakh Ganesh idols are immersed in the Ulsoor Lake alone, every year.
The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner, Lakshminarayana has visited the immersion sites for the Ganesha and Gauri idols, and issued strict orders to ensure a safe and smooth immersion across the city. The Palike authorities have been asked to co-ordinate with the City police for security and also to ensure adequate illuminations and barricade at the immersion spots.
The BBMP has also released a set of guidelines to be followed by the citizens on the day of Ganesha festival. As per the guidelines, a restriction of time has been placed on the immersion of Ganesha idols till 10.30 pm. Also a ban has been placed on fire crackers and loudspeakers at the immersion areas.
Most of the idols are immersed at Halasuru Lake (Ulsoor Lake), Sankey Tank, Yediyur Lake, Tavarekere Lake, Madiwala lake, Bellandur Lake and Sanegurvanahalli tank.
The BBMP has arranged mobile tanks for the immersion purpose, if the people choose to, can immerse idols up to two and half feet.
The BBMP has provided garbage containers at the entrance of the tank areas where the people have been requested to dispose garbage which include flowers and other waste in order to protect the lakes from pollutant.
The BBMP has also appealed to the people to avoid idols made with oil paints and other pollutant materials. The Palike in association with local non-governmental organization has also kept lifeguards and divers in all the lake areas as a precautionary measure.
Hyderabad
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has also made proper arrangements at the Hussain Sagar Lake for the immersion of Ganesh idols. Former Indian Cricket star VVS Laxman has been campaigning for the bio-degradable Ganesh idols. He has appealed to the people not to pollute water bodies by immersing the idols without taking proper care.
The Kairatabad Ganesh Pandal is the biggest in the city. Every year the organisers install the tallest Ganesh idol here. This year the height of Ganesh is 59 feet.
The Governor ESL Narasimhan performed a special pooja at the pandal on Monday morning. The twin city of Hyderabad and Secundarabad have nearly 25,000 Ganesh pandals.
