HYDERABAD: After three private hospitals faced action for flouting environmental norms, now it’s the turn of the Gandhi Hospital and the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) to face the music. The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) slapped notices on the two hospitals for the same offence. APPCB said the 967-bed NIMS was so negligent that banana peels and medical waste were found in the dustbins at its ICU. The waste was supposed to be disposed of after disinfecting. As in the case of the private hospitals, which came under the scanner for not sending the waste to effluent treatment plants, NIMS and Gandhi hospitals too do not have waste disposal techniques for medical waste. NIMS disposes of everything through the Banjara Nala which reaches the Hussainsagar. “This includes anatomical waste. Faecal matter and medical waste are let out into the common drain,” an APPCB official said. The hospitals generate about 12 lakh litres of liquid waste in a day (9 lakh sewage and 3 lakh litre chemical waste) all of which is disposed of without disinfecting. In the Gandhi Hospital, only four out of eight autoclaves are in working condition. The authorisation issued by the APPCB for the hospital to tie up with an effluent treatment company, has also lapsed. NIMS and Gandhi hospitals do not have valid Consent for Establishment and Consent for Operation from the APPCB.
