Freedom fighter and former governor of Uttar Pradesh B Satyanarayana Reddy died at a hospital here on Saturday. He was 86. Reddy, who had been suffering from a lung-related aliment for some time, was admitted to a private hospital here a few days ago.
He was born on August 21, 1927 in an agriculturist’s family at Annaram village in Shadnagar mandal in Mahbubnagar district. At the age of 14 years, he participated in the Quit India Movement.
He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1978 on Janata Party ticket and again in 1984 on Telugu Desam ticket. He served as governor of Uttar Pradesh (1990-93) and Orissa (1993-95).
Mourning the death, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy recalled the veteran leader’s services to the society. Kiran, who visited Satyanarayana Reddy’s residence, paid floral tributes to the departed leader and consoled the grieving family members.
Governor ESL Narasimhan, Union minister S Jaipal Reddy, panchayat raj mininister K Jana Reddy, information & public relations minister DK Aruna and leader of the opposition N Chandrababu Naidu also morned the death.
BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu described Satyanarayana Reddy as a strong socialist and nationalist, and recalled his fight against imposition of emergency in 1975. Naidu, along with party state president G Kishan Reddy, visited Satyanarayana Reddy’s residence and paid their last respects to him.
