CHENNAI: Srinivas Young Men’s Association(SYMA) distributed free school uniforms to 1,200 students and honoured school toppers at Triplicane yesterday.The SYMA, an organisation which is doing lots of welfare work in and around Triplicane, organised the event with an aim to encourage poor students in their education.Higher education department’s principal secretary, R Kannan IAS, and member of the state planning commission Dr K Sridhar, were the chief guests at the event.Distributing the prizes, Dr K Sridhar stressed the need of donating organs. “SYMA should hold a campaign to spread awareness on donating organs. After death, this is the only way for us to help others in getting healthy life,” he said.Toppers from the schools in Triplicane were honoured with medals and cash awards. SYMA is conducting a free tuition centre for Classes 10 and 12 students from that locality in order to support them in scoring high marks in public examinations.In addition, prizes were also distributed to the winners of SYMA-Gold Winner cricket contest that was conducted few days ago. CR Sridhar from Gold-winner felicitated the winners.Alongside, names of 2,200 willing blood donors with their contact numbers and addresses were collected from the participants and audience of this cricket contest. “These details will shortly be published on our website www.syma.in and the people in need could make use of it,” said the president of SYMA, TA Sampathkumar.Recognising his service in medical field, CEO of Sankara Eye Hospital J Babu was given ‘SYMA Seva Award 2011’. He was felicitated for conducting eye camps across the state and doing free eye operations for poor. SYMA is also running a medical centre at Triplicane, which offers medical treatment to poor by charging only Rs 2. The association is planning to conduct an Inter-school competition in November this year.
