BANGALORE: With other departments bracing up for the launch, the Signalling and Telecommunications (S&T) Department too is in the list and has geared up to ensure that communication does not fail on the D-day. The Reach 1 developed at the cost of Rs1,540 crore will have dedicated communication, and signalling developed at a cost of Rs 740 crore,  which will cater to the entire Metro Phase 1. Speaking to Express, Shankar A S, Chief Engineer for S&T, said that they had received all necessary approvals from the Department of Telecommunications. “We have received 20 Mhz of spectrum by the DOT nearly an year ago,” he shared and added that even the Delhi Metro possessed this dedicated spectrum for uninterrupted communication for smooth run. He also shared that all technical staff, maintenance staff, control personnel which includes drivers would have a hand-held Tetra communication device. The budget for S & T also includes the entire signalling for the Metro project, he said. Sharing the security features of the stations, he also said that there would be baggage scanners at the ticketing area to ensure security. Shankar added that every Metro station would have 50-60 CCTV cameras and the same would be transmitted to the Operations Control Center (OCC) in Byappanahalli station.“The CCTV images would be stored in PDA format and seven days worth footage can be recorded,” he said. Reacting to queries about power failures and system failures, he said that they were equipped with UPS power back up for all systems and the servers would be on stand-by.
