BANGALORE: Surya Seva Kendra, in association with Indian Red Cross Association (NGO), has placed first aid boxes in major traffic junctions in the city. These boxes contain basic necessities to attend to minor injuries due to road accidents. Currently, over 25 boxes have been placed at various traffic umbrellas and busy roads junctions.Founder of Surya Seva Kendra and managing body member of Indian Red Cross Society, T N Ravikumar, said,“I live on West of Cord Road. Many accidents have occurred at night and I used to help the injured by giving water and first aid. This happened too often that I started keeping mud pots with water on a regular basis. But, people misused my efforts by breaking the pots or wasting the water. That is when I came up with this idea of placing first aid boxes at signals.” He added, “Road accidents in the city are due to increase in traffic and careless driving. It is hard to keep people safe from getting seriously injured. Lack of first aid can turn accidents fatal.” Ravikumar is looking to to cover every signal in the city. His work has been recognised by others and now he has been nick named as First Aid Kumar. “I have spent my money in placing the first 25 boxes. Each box costs me around `2,000. Based on my research, there are close to 500 busy signals where I am planning to place these boxes.” Many MLAs and Corporators have come forward and requested him to place the boxes in their locality. “The maintenance of the these boxes will be shared by nearby medical stores, nursing homes, hospitals and Indian Red Cross Society,” added Ravikumar. However, Ravikumar has a concern. “We have placed a box opposite to the Metro Station on M G Road. The box is misused by auto drivers. Medicines and bandages go missing,” he said. Ravikumar is looking for sponsors and requests the public to help him in this initiative.  “I request the public to place at least one band-aid or what ever they think will  be helpful, once a month, in these boxes.” Many schools, busy building and companies have come forward to help him in his initiative and have volunteered to maintain the boxes close to their premises.
