CHENNAI: A 27-year-old man from Mumbai was arrested at the airport for allegedly possessing a fake passport on Monday. So far, the airport police have held seven passengers over the last 10 days with fake documents and 87 passengers this year.Police said Abdullah Sheik of Worli, Mumbai, who  came to Chennai from Muscat via Mumbai, was caught by the immigration officials for possessing a passport in the name of Vijayan from Thiruvananthapuram. They said he had gone to Oman six months ago and was working as an office assistant. He had just arrived at the airport on early Monday morning in a national carrier when he was caught.Police said they have held seven passengers in the past 10 days for possessing fake documents and 87 passengers in total so far — 50 were caught on arrival and 37 when they attempted to fly. However, they said this number is comparatively less than what it used to be years ago.“Immigration check has become very stringent here. So, many passengers attempting to fly with fake documents opt for Mumbai and Delhi airport. After Indians, many Sri Lankans have also been caught with fake documents,” said an airport police official.
