CHENNAI: The city police on Thursday arrested an engineering college teacher on charges of cruelty to a woman and criminal intimidation, following his wife’s complaint that he was living with another woman.Police said Nagajyothi (26) of Anna Nagar lodged a complaint with the public grievance cell of the police commissioner’s office that she and Karuppasamy (26) of Modern City, Pattabiram, had fallen in love when they were studying at a college in their native town Tuticorin. They had come to Chennai for work and were living together for nine months in Guduvanchery. The man was working as a teacher in a private engineering college at Tambaram, while the woman was working in a private firm, police said and added that they got married in the month of March.Police sources said the woman had gone back to her native place following a problem between the couple and, when she returned to Chennai, she was made to stay in a hostel at Choolaimedu for two months. “When the woman asked her husband if they could find a house to stay, he had sent her back to her native place, Tuticorin. The woman tried to contact him but in vain,” a police official said.Later, she found that the man was living with another woman and filed a complaint that he had taken away 22 sovereigns of gold jewellery and `1 lakh. A case was filed at the Avadi All Women Police Station and Karuppasamy was arrested under IPC sections 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) and 506 (1) (Punishment for criminal intimidation).
