BARIPADA: A 60-year-old man was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Sunahoja village under Betnoti forest range in Mayurbhanj district on Tuesday night. The deceased has been identified as Ugrasen Mahanta. Police said an elephant trampled him to death when Mahanta was guarding paddy in the field near Ashanbani forest. IIC Sudarsan Dash said villagers found his body and later informed his son Kedar Mohanta. The body bore head injury marks.Baripada DFO Bijay Kumar Panda said the district administration has provided ` 10,000 as initial compensation to his family members.Sources said a herd of 75 elephants from Dalma reserve forest in Jharkhand had strayed into Betnoti and later moved to Kulidha reserve forest in Balasore. At present, the herd, divided into two groups, has taken shelter in Phujhali and Ashanbani forests.
