CHENKANAL: A mango hub, first-of-its-kind in the State, will soon be opened in Dhenkanal.Some of Odisha’s best quality mangoes are grown in Dhenkanal. The mangoes are export quality certified.A meeting in this regard was held recently between the district horticulture officials and farmers under the Kapilas Mango Growers Association.At present, the district is producing over 50,000 MT of mangoes per annum, but a lot many farmers are having to face distress sale in the absence of storage facilities and market linkage.Around 5,000 farmers have been growing Ambrapalli, Keshari, Lengada and Mallika varieties of mangoes in the district on a commercial basis.The mango hub is aimed at checking distress sale and facilitating export of quality mangoes and strengthening farmers’ economy.District Collector Bishnu Prasad Panda said the mango hub would be built under PPP mode at a cost of ` 4 crore and funds for the purpose would be diverted from MGNREGS, Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana and the integrated scheme under Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA).Deputy Director of Horticulture Haribandhu Biswal said mango plantation would be done in 750 hectares.The mango cultivation under the National Horticulture Mission was also discussed.
